** NOTICE  The museum will reopen Charter Day Sunday, March 14, 2010 at noon until 4:00 pm.  A reduced daily schedule of Thursday through Saturday 10:00 am to 4:00 pm; Sundays Noon until 4:00 pm will be in effect.  We will resume full-time hours April 01, 2010.

MILITARY HISTORY LECTURE SERIES - The last Monday of the Month (Except MAY, NOV & DEC) Sponsored by The Friends of the Pennsylvania Military Museum.

January 17 – DOCUMENTARY FILM: “You Enter Germany – Bloody Huertgen and the Siegfried Line” Between September 1944 and February 1945 thirteen U.S. Army divisions fought for control of a 50 square mile area of dense forest along the German border.  This battle was the longest single battle in American history and largest defeat of the U.S. Army in Europe.  This 2007 German production tells that story with veteran’s interviews and never before seen archival footage. (104 minutes). Free Admission - 2:00 p.m.  *Annual

March 14 - CHARTER DAY - Free admission to the Military Museum and other select Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission sites on this date to commemorate the granting of the Charter from Charles II to William Penn which founded “Penn’s Woods” in 1681.   *Annual  NOTE: Reduced hours in effect  thru March; 1000 to 1600 Thursday -Saturday, Noon to 1600 Sunday; Closed Monday -Wednesday.

April thru June - EXHIBIT: "Memories of Service - PA National Guard Mementos from The Great War"  More than 25,000 Commonwealth citizens served with the 28th Infantry Division in World War One.  This temporary exhibit will showcase the souvenir items that soldiers bought, found, traded or made to commemorate their experiences.  Museum admission required to view exhibit.

April 06 - LECTURE The Central Pennsylvania Civil War Roundtable Presents:   Dr. Greg Ferro will speak on “Abraham Lincoln – United We Stand.”  Dr. Ferro has been interviewed numerous times on local radio and television on topics regarding Abraham Lincoln and other Presidents. He currently teaches two courses through Elderhostel including “The Six Most Interesting Presidents of the Twentieth Century.”  Free Admission – 7:00 p.m.

April 17 & 18 - BATTERY B DRILL WEEKEND - The Civil War Era re-enactment group of the 3rd Pennsylvania Volunteers will encamp on the museum grounds demonstrating the loading and firing of replica period artillery pieces while they conduct  their yearly safety qualifying session and recruitment drive.  Interested persons of all ages are invited to enlist. 1300 till 1600    *Annual

May 09 - Bridge of Hope Mother's Day Walk - Join us on this date as we walk the parade grounds of the 28th Infantry Division's National Shrine in support of fund raising for single, homeless mothers in Centre County.  1300 to 1700.  Please call 814-466-6156 for more information. 

May 16 - A CELEBRATION OF SERVICE: HONORING PENNSYLVANIA VETERANS - U.S. Army reunion and memorial service sponsored by the Pennsylvania National Guard commemorating the Pennsylvanian Citizen Soldier.  Activities include a military band concert, distinguished speaker, helicopter/vehicle displays and a twenty-one-gun, 105mm howitzer battery salute.  Call ahead for itinerary.  Hours – 1230 to 1500.  This is an AW (All Weather) event - Rain or Shine.  *Annual

May 29 & 30 - "WORLD WAR II REVISITED" - American and German WWII reenactors will bivouac on the grounds of the Pennsylvania Military Museum portraying field life in the European Theater of Operations, 1944-45.  A small squad tactical demonstration against German opposition is scheduled for 1300 each day.  Bivouac and tactical open to the public 1000 till 1600.  This is an AW (All Weather) event - Rain or Shine.  *Annual

May 29 - SERVICE CANTEEN - Dan and Galla will celebrate America by entertaining the troops at the World War II Revisited Bivouac on the grounds of the museum.  This special USO style show will highlight the WWII era with a performance by our area's best recognized vocal and musical duo.  Free Admission - 1500

May 31 - ALLEGHENY MOUNTAIN REGION A.A.C.A. CAR SHOW - Local Regional Antique Automobile Club of America Chapter’s annual summer season kickoff event featuring many pre-war through modern classics on display throughout the grounds of the 28th Division Shrine Complex/PA Military Museum.  The theme for 2009 is "200 Years of Transportation History" in honor of Boalsburg's 200th birthday celebration.  Visit www.boalsburgcentral.com for more deatils on events in town.  Donation accepted for parking. 0900 to 1600  *Annual

June 14 - FLAG DAY CELEBRATION - The State College Elks Lodge and local veterans organizations will sponsor a joint Flag Day Service and U.S. Flag Retirement Ceremony on the grounds of the 28th Division Shrine. The public is encouraged to bring their unserviceable American Flags for the proper disposal. Free Admission 6:00 p.m.  *Annual

June TBD - "CVIM Cycling for Care" Bike Ride - Second Annual fund raising event for the Centre Volunteers in Medicine organization which has been providing free medical and dental services to area residents since 2003.  Participants may choose between 08, 35 or 50 mile bike loops beginning and ending at the Pennsylvania Military Museum.  Please visit www.cvim.net for more information. 

July 06 - LECTURE The Central Pennsylvania Civil War Roundtable Presents:   Scott L. Mingus will speak on “The Louisiana Tigers in The Gettysburg Campaign.”  Harry T. Hays’ First Louisiana Brigade is well known for its role in attacking East Cemetery Hill at Gettysburg in July 2, 1863. Free Admission – 7:00 p.m.

July 24 & 25 - "VIETNAM Revisited" - Living Historians portraying American combat and support troops in Vietnam will interpret the late 1960's "in country” in Southeast Asia on the grounds of the Pennsylvania Military Museum.  Daily programs include the oportunity to accompanying squads on short range patrols and two tactical patrol ambush demonstrations at 1300 and 1500 each day.  NOTE: Sandals and shorts are not recommended for those wishing to accompany patrols.  Bivouac open 1000 to 1600 on Saturday and Sunday.  This is an AW (All Weather) event - Rain or Shine.   *Annual

September 07 - LECTURE/Picnic - The Central Pennsylvania Civil War Roundtable Presents:  “Civil War Medicine in Afghanistan?  The Letterman Legacy 1862 to Present” Mr. Wunderlich is the Executive Director of the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in Frederick, MD, and an historian with The History Center Inc.  Free Admission – 6:00 p.m.

September 11 & 12 - "Then & NOW" - Visit this Living History Time Line of Uniforms and Equipment from the Colonial Period thru the Present.  18th and 19th century fashion show begins at 1300 followed by the 20th and 21st centuries at 1400 with a historic weapons demonstration at 1500.  Encampment/Bivouac opens at 1000 till 1600 each day.  This is an AW (All Weather) event.  *Annual

October 05 - LECTURE The Central Pennsylvania Civil War Roundtable Presents:  Dr. Janice S. McElhoe will speak on “Shadows of War – Prelude to the First Memorial Day.” This presentation describes events in Boalsburg before and during deployment of Company G of the 148th Pennsylvanians to the Civil War.  It follows the young soldiers and their families through the excitement of going to war and the increasingly difficult years of the Civil War that culminated in the observance of the first Memorial Day.  Free Admission – 7:00 p.m.November 09 - LECTURE The Central Pennsylvania Civil War Roundtable Presents:   John Quarstein will speak on “Fort Monroe: The Key to the South.”  Mr. Quarstein is an author of nine books and received the President’s Award for Historic Preservation.  He is currently the Director of the Virginia War Museum in Newport News, VA.  Free Admission – 7:00 p.m.

November 04 thru November 24 - EXHIBIT -  Santa's Draft Card - Reverend Santa Claus of Saline County Missouri registered for the draft in World War II.  A copy of his draft registration from the Selective Service System will be on display in the month long exhibit. NOTE: Holiday Season Hours in effect November; 1000 to 1600 Thursday -Saturday, Noon to 1600 Sunday; Closed Monday -Wednesday.
