World War II Revisited

(Scroll below these classic photos for a 2009 update)

20th century living history programs at the Pennsylvania Military Museum began on Memorial Day Weekend 1999.  Reenactors portraying L Company of the 109th Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division bivouacked on the grounds that Saturday and Sunday entertaining and educating the public.  An afternoon combat scenario against a German sniper was re-enacted each day and a Central Pennsylvania tradition was started.

Mail Call 2001.  One of the reenactors had taken the time to draft Vmail for selected members of the unit.  It made for quite an interesting gathering as the letters from "home" were read aloud.

Living history programs provide a great opportunity to hear first hand accounts of history as it is made.  It is also a good time to adjust the historical impressions assumed by the reenactors.  LT Tom Gray is speaking with WWII veteran Mr. Edward Bliss of the 101st Airborne during the 2008 event.

The Americans take to the field for the 2009 event.  The US troop strength was reduced this year because a significant number of the reenactors are active duty military personnel deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Germans enjoy some donated pies from the local Perkins Family Restaurant.  Giant Market and Wegmans of State College also assist in providing rations to the troops.  Our living history volunteers are just that - volunteers.  They receive no payment of any kind other than the generosity of food and drink provided by the Friends of the Military Museum and these local businesses.
